\u201cThe wagon was made of wood, and there was nothing inside except for a wooden floor and a small<\/span><\/span>
window. The gendarmes who locked them in the wagon beat and insulted them. These gendarmes<\/span><\/span>
confiscated their animals. There were four gendarmes in each wagon be<\/span><\/span>cause they feared we would <\/span><\/span>escape when the train stopped. People were cramped against each other. <\/span><\/span><\/span>At each stop, they were given a piece of bread and cabbage. The interviewee’s 3<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>year<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>old brother <\/span><\/span>died of thirst on the train, but the body was<\/span><\/span> <\/span>transported to Bug and buried there in a field after they <\/span><\/span>arrived. The gendarme [who was guarding the deportees] beat the mother because her little brother <\/span>was crying. The train did not stop until it reached Transnistria, traveling for three days and three <\/span>nights [\u2026]\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Historical Note on Roma<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

Roma have been present in the municipality of R\u00e2mnicu V\u00e2lcea since the 15th century, on the <\/span><\/span>estates of the R\u00e2mnicului Episcopate (Soare 2012, II: 30<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>31). The favorable geographical location on <\/span><\/span>the right bank of the Olt River, at the intersection of trade r<\/span><\/span>outes, and the exploitation of mining<\/span><\/span>
resources encouraged the settlement of Roma craftsmen (coppersmiths, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, <\/span><\/span>etc.). By the end of the 19th century, the city had a population of 7,417 (MDGR 1902, V: 246). The <\/span><\/span>population doubled by 193<\/span><\/span>0, reaching 15,648 inhabitants, including 81 Roma (RGP 1930, II: 496<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>
497). In addition to the sedentary Roma, nomadic Roma families would set up camp on the outskirts <\/span><\/span>or nearby the city during certain times of the year. According to the interviewee’s testi<\/span><\/span>mony, these <\/span><\/span>Roma crafted metal objects and went into the town to sell their goods for household use.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

The interviewee’s family was deported from R\u00e2mnicu V\u00e2lcea at the beginning of September. After <\/span><\/span>their belongings and animals were confiscated, the Roma were taken to the local train station. There, <\/span><\/span>they were processed and boarded onto wagons attached to the<\/span><\/span> special train E8 bound for <\/span><\/span>Transnistria. The journey lasted about three days and three nights, and some of the deportees, <\/span><\/span>including the interviewee’s 3<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>year<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>old brother, died due to the lack of adequate food and drinking <\/span><\/span>water.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Upon arrival in Transnistria, the deportees were placed in barns and forced to work on a collective<\/span><\/span>
farm. Families were made to work in the fields, harvesting corn in exchange for small food rations.<\/span><\/span>
After six months, the deported Roma were relocated near<\/span><\/span> the village of Tridubi (Golta County).<\/span><\/span>
They were housed in hovels and subjected to forced labor once again. Violent acts (rape, beatings,<\/span><\/span>
arbitrary executions, etc.) were routine; the interviewee witnessed several such acts committed by<\/span><\/span>
the guards at the l<\/span><\/span>abor camps and lost a relative (mother<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>law) to this violence.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Repatriation to Romania likely took place in the spring of 1944. The gendarmes told the deportees<\/span><\/span>
that they could buy a horse and return to Romania. The family returned to Slatina and, with the help<\/span><\/span>
of the locals, gradually rebuilt their life.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
