At first, during<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">the skirmish, several Roma children were crushed by horses.<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Later, the column [of deportees] <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">headed towards Zorina, where they settled in an empty field, under the open sky, near a barn. The <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Russians came to sell fish. They stayed here until September. Occasionally, they would receive food<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">rations. The town is<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">located about 44 km from the city of Suceava. At the end of the 19th century, it was a rural <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">commune, which included the town of Dolhasca as well as the village<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">s of Probota, Buda, and Gulia, <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">with a population of 4,406 (MDRG 1900, III: 167<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">168). The majority of Roma lived in the village of<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Gulia, which was separated from Dolhasca and became its own commune after 1900. In 1930, the<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">commune of Gulia had 1,286 inhabi<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">tants, including 242 Roma. Dolhasca commune had 2,081<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">inhabitants in the 1930 census, but no Roma (RGP 1930, II: 44<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">45). In 1931, Gulia reverted to being <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">a village and was annexed back to Dolhasca commune (Baia County) (TRCR 1931: 37).<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p75R_mc12\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p75R_mc12\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Historical Note on Deportation<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span id=\"p75R_mc13\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p75R_mc13\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The deportation of Roma from Dolhasca took place in several stages. In May 1942, the gendarmes<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">registered the Roma in the locality and identified 178 sedentary Roma, many without means of<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">livelihood and some with criminal records. This list included the in<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">terviewee\u2019s family, along with<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">several uncles and aunts (ANI, IGJ Fund, file no. 203\/1942, pp. 48). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p75R_mc13\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The interviewee\u2019s father was <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">warned of the imminent deportation and tried desperately to save his family by volunteering for <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">military service, hoping to be<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">sent to the front. His attempt failed, and the entire family was included <\/span><\/span><\/span>on the final deportation list from Dolhasca. The 100 Roma (40 families) on this list were taken by gendarmes from their homes in September 1942. Their property was nationalized, and they were <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">escorted to the local train station, where they were loaded onto<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">cattle cars bound for Pa\u0219cani<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Ia\u0219i.<\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page css-127\" data-page-number=\"9\"><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p77R_mc0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">After a brief stop in Ia\u0219i, the cattle cars were attached to the special train E7 Ia\u0219i<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Tighina, which <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">departed on September 16, traveling the Ia\u0219i<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Tighina<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Tiraspol route, and reached Transnistria after<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">nearly a week (AN<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">I, IGJ Fund, file no. 127\/1942, pp. 128; 133).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p77R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Once in Transnistria, some of the Roma from Dolhasca<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">, including the interviewee\u2019s family, were <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">escorted to the Oceakov County. They passed by a German colony where they were attacked by the <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">locals (who feared that they would be evicted and replaced by deported Roma) and temporarily<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">settled near Zorina, unde<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">r the open sky. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p77R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">They eventually reached the village of Kovalevka (Oceakov <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">County), where they were placed in the barns of a collective farm. Many died due to the cold and <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">hunger. The interviewee\u2019s father submitted a petition for repatriation in December 19<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">42, arguing that <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">he was part of the mobilizable Roma category. His petition was rejected by the Baia Gendarmerie <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Legion in January 1943, citing that he had been discharged from the army and was considered a \u201cbad <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">element\u201d (ANI, IGJ Fund, file no. 43\/1943, 1<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">:47).<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p77R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p77R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The interviewee\u2019s family was moved to Vorov\u0219cina, a village from which the local Ukrainian<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">inhabitants had been evacuated. The Roma lived in houses for almost two years and worked on a <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">collective farm. Forced labor, hunger, cold, and typhus caused the deat<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">h of more than half of the <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">deportees. According to the interviewee, the bodies were buried by the deportees in mass graves and <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">separate graves outside the village. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p77R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The interviewee lost their mother, two brothers, and one sister. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p77R_mc3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The repatriation likely occurred in the spring or summer of 1944, following the retreat of the <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Romanian<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">German forces from Transnistria in the face of the advancing Red Army. The deportees <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">boarded a train filled with Romanian and German soldiers and headed<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">towards Ivanovka (Berezovka <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">County), from where they continued towards Romania.
