\u201c[\u2026] The deportees lived for three months on a field in Domaniovka, from spring to late autumn.<\/div><\/div>

Shortly after their arrival, their horses and carts were confiscated. They were guarded by Romanian <\/span><\/span>gendarmes, \u2018Ukrainian soldiers,\u2019 and the \u2018police.\u2019 They coul<\/span><\/span>d go to the neighboring village, about 10 <\/span><\/span>km away, to search for food, but only secretly. At the beginning of summer, when thousands of <\/span><\/span>Roma were dying from hunger and cold, the gendarmes decided not to disperse the Roma in various <\/span><\/span>villages: Golta, Trei Du<\/span><\/span>be, Krivoie, Siriovka, Savran, Varvarovka, Libachovka\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/span>
[\u2026] On the field, people were guarded by the gendarmes and lived in pits dug into the ground to <\/span><\/span>protect themselves from the cold. Those who had no money ate corpses, as they had no salt and died <\/span><\/span>from poisoning.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The interviewee was born in the commune of St\u00e2ng\u0103ceaua, located about 65 km from Drobeta <\/span><\/span>Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin. At the end of the 19th century, the commune had 1,580 inhabitants (MDGR 1902, V: <\/span><\/span>471). Around 1930, the population dropped to 747 inhabitants, including<\/span><\/span> 8 sedentary Roma (RGP <\/span><\/span>1930, II: 284<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>285). According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, there were also several nomadic Roma <\/span><\/span>families in the commune who traveled seasonally to nearby villages to sell various aluminum <\/span><\/span>objects.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on Deportation<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
<\/span><\/p>

The Roma from St\u00e2ng\u0103ceaua commune were registered in May 1942 by local gendarmes. These <\/span><\/span>same gendarmes began rounding up the nomads from the locality and surrounding areas starting in <\/span><\/span>June 1942 and escorted them to the county seat. The interviewee\u2019s family<\/span><\/span> was detained in Fl\u0103m\u00e2nda <\/span><\/span>commune (now Jiana commune). The gendarmes organized the nomadic Roma into convoys and <\/span><\/span>escorted them from post to post to Transnistria, following the Ia\u0219i<\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>Tighina<\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>Tiraspol route.<\/span><\/span>
Deportees were not allowed to go into villages to s<\/span><\/span>earch for food (those who violated this order were <\/span><\/span>beaten and killed, with their bodies left unburied by the side of the road).<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The nomadic Roma arrived in Transnistria during the summer and were placed in a field in the <\/span><\/span>commune of Domaniovka (Golta County). Shortly after arrival, their horses and carts were <\/span><\/span>confiscated, though they likely managed to keep their tents. The gendarmes<\/span><\/span> who guarded them<\/span><\/span>
forbade them from traveling through the villages to search for food, but some deportees secretly <\/span><\/span>went to nearby farms to buy food. Some Roma, including the interviewee\u2019s family, managed to hide <\/span><\/span>their gold coins from the gendarmes\u2019 greed.<\/span><\/span> However, cold and hunger caused thousands of deaths <\/span><\/span>among the deportees. Many lived in makeshift huts dug into the earth, and driven by hunger, they <\/span><\/span>resorted to eating human flesh (leftover corpses). <\/span><\/span><\/span>The interviewee managed to escape from Domaniovka and hide at a Ukrainian farm. The farmer <\/span><\/span>took him in, and he married the farmer\u2019s daughter, in exchange for helping with the fieldwork. <\/span><\/span>However, he did not forget his family left behind in Domaniovka: he se<\/span><\/span>cretly returned three times <\/span><\/span>and, with the help of a brigadier and an engineer, brought them food. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The interviewee\u2019s family likely returned to Romania in the spring<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>summer of 1944.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>
