\u201c[\u2026] They arrived in Karanika. They were placed in a camp, in a barn. They were told to wait for <\/span><\/span>the local Russian residents to be evacuated from their homes [so that the deportees could move into <\/span><\/span>them]. They slept on the floor, on straw, with two blankets<\/span><\/span> they brought with them. They stayed <\/span><\/span>there for two weeks [\u2026]<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Later, they were moved into houses. There was a large pit where the corpses were thrown. When it <\/span><\/span>filled up, the bodies were thrown in heaps. The heaps of bodies were along the road leading from the <\/span><\/span>barns to the wells. The bodies were left there.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Russians still lived in the village, and they would treat them badly, beat them, and give them nothing <\/span><\/span>to eat. They stayed a year in Karanika. The children didn\u2019t work, they stayed inside the house. My <\/span><\/span>brother, father, and grandfather died from the epidemi<\/span><\/span>c and hunger at Karanika [\u2026].\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span>:
<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
Valea Ursului is a village located in the commune of T\u00e2mna, Mehedin\u021bi County, about 35 km from <\/span><\/span>Drobeta Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin. At the end of the 19th century, the commune had 740 inhabitants (MDGR <\/span><\/span>1902, V: 606). Alongside Romanians, several dozen sedentary Roma fam<\/span><\/span>ilies lived there. According <\/span><\/span>to the 1930 general census, T\u00e2mna had 374 inhabitants, of whom 27 were sedentary Roma (RGP <\/span><\/span>1930, II.1: 284<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>285). In reality, the number was much higher, as the Mehedin\u021bi Gendarmerie <\/span><\/span>identified 129 “problematic Roma” in the comm<\/span><\/span>une of T\u00e2mna in May 1942 (ANI, fond IGJ, file no. <\/span><\/span>201\/1942: p. 151; 161<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>162). According to the interviewee’s testimony, some of these Roma were<\/span><\/span>
engaged in agriculture.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on Deportation<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/span>

The gendarmes evacuated the Roma from Valea Ursului from their homes in early September 1942. According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, the Roma were escorted by local gendarmes to the Drobeta train station. They waited for a week on a nearby field after t<\/span><\/span>he mayor had promised them <\/span><\/span>land and money. Around September 12, 1942, they were loaded into freight cars attached to the<\/div><\/div>
special E8 train bound for Tighina. After an inhumane journey of almost a week, during which many <\/span><\/span>deportees lost their lives, they arri<\/span><\/span>ved in Transnistria (ANI, fond IGJ nr. 126\/1942: p. 109; p. 213<\/span><\/span>– <\/span><\/span>214v).<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Upon arrival in Transnistria, the deported Roma realized they had been deceived and would have to <\/span><\/span>work in a kolkhoz near Karanika (Oceakov County). Under the strict supervision of the gendarmes, <\/span><\/span>the deportees were first housed in barns, then in the houses<\/span><\/span> from which Ukrainian locals had been <\/span><\/span>evacuated. They stayed for a year in Karanika, then were relocated to Vasilievka, where they were <\/span><\/span>housed in barns for another year. Hunger, cold, and typhus claimed many lives among the Roma (the <\/span><\/span>interviewee lost their<\/span><\/span> brother, father, and grandfather in Karanika). A glimmer of hope appeared <\/span><\/span>when the interviewee\u2019s uncle, a conscripted soldier, arrived in Transnistria and managed to release<\/span><\/span>
his wife and children. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The interviewee returned to Romania later (likely in the spring of 1944), when the Romanian<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>German troops began to retreat from Transnistria. The journey home was grueling, and physical <\/span><\/span>exhaustion, lack of food, and Soviet air raids caused many casualties<\/span><\/span> (the interviewee lost a nephew <\/span><\/span>and two aunts). After walking much of the way, the interviewee\u2019s family managed to board a train <\/span><\/span>bound for Odessa. Following the Odessa<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Tiraspol<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Tighina<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Bucharest route, after several months, <\/span><\/span>they finally returned to T\u00e2mna bu<\/span><\/span>t could not recover their belongings, including their house, which <\/span><\/span>had been nationalized.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>
