\u201c[\u2026] After arriving at Moldovka, all the belongings [of the deported Roma] were confiscated and <\/span><\/span>they were sent to work at a kolkhoz. In Moldovka, they were taken to a police station where there <\/span><\/span>were Romanians, Russians, and Germans, all wearing uniforms. L<\/span><\/span>ater, they were escorted on foot to <\/span><\/span><\/span>Burilova. They traveled for two weeks. Many died on the way. Those who couldn\u2019t keep up were shot by the gendarmes, who walked behind them. <\/span><\/span><\/span>In Burilova, they lived in huts on a large field. The entire family lived in one hut. The buliba\u0219a <\/span><\/span>decided who should live in a certain hut. They had the same buliba\u0219a as at the beginning of the <\/span><\/span>deportation. The buliba\u0219a had a tent in the middle of the fie<\/span><\/span>ld. On this field, there were only <\/span><\/span>coppersmiths.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div>

The commune of \u0218tefan cel Mare was established in 1893 and initially belonged to Romana\u021bi <\/span><\/span>County. Located about 135 km from Slatina, the commune had 1,887<\/span><\/span> inhabitants, including one <\/span><\/span>sedentary Roma in 1930 (RGP 1930, II: 376). According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, some Roma <\/span><\/span>families, particularly coppersmiths, temporarily settled near the village to sell their products <\/span><\/span>(household tools, copper cauldrons,<\/span><\/span> etc.).<\/span><\/span><\/span>

The interviewee\u2019s family was deported in the summer of 1942 while in \u0218tefan cel Mare commune <\/span><\/span>(Romana\u021bi County). All the nomads in the locality were gathered on a nearby field by the local <\/span><\/span>gendarmes, who registered them for deportation. They were later esco<\/span><\/span>rted from post to post by <\/span><\/span>gendarmes, who promised that they would receive cattle and houses in Transnistria.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
After crossing the border into Transnistria, the interviewee\u2019s family was escorted to Moldova <\/span><\/span>commune (Golta County) and spent some time in a camp surrounded by barbed wire. The gendarmes <\/span><\/span>in Moldovka confiscated almost all the deportees’ belongings (horse<\/span><\/span>s, carts, valuables, etc.). Some <\/span><\/span>managed to hide their gold coins from the gendarmes’ greed. The interviewee witnessed the mass <\/span><\/span>execution of a group of Jewish deportees (including children) inside the camp. The commander of <\/span><\/span>the camp threatened the Roma tha<\/span><\/span>t they would meet the same fate if they resisted.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Along with other coppersmiths, the interviewee\u2019s family was relocated to Burilova commune (Golta <\/span><\/span>County). For almost 2 years and 4 months, the deported Roma were housed in huts and forced to <\/span><\/span>work in agricultural farms or kolkhozes (building silos, harvesti<\/span><\/span>ng corn, and potatoes from the <\/span><\/span>fields). The food rations were small, and the gendarmes engaged in acts of violence (beatings and <\/span><\/span>rapes). Driven by hunger, the interviewee and their family would secretly leave the kolkhoz and <\/span><\/span>travel to nearby localities (up<\/span><\/span> to Tiraspol) to find food. According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, <\/span><\/span>hunger caused numerous deaths among the Roma. The interviewee\u2019s father and grandfather died in <\/span><\/span>Transnistria.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The repatriation to Romania likely took place in the spring<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>summer of 1944, with the withdrawal of <\/span><\/span>the Romanian<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>German troops from Transnistria. The journey home was full of dangers, and many <\/span><\/span>Roma lost their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
