“In 1942, they were taken to a camp. They were in Ia\u0219i when they were arrested […] From Ungheni, <\/span><\/span>they were taken to B\u0103l\u021bi. Then, they started their journey toward Ukraine. They crossed the Dniester <\/span><\/span>at R\u00e2bni\u021ba. They traveled all the way to the Bug River.<\/span><\/span> They were still escorted by Romanian <\/span><\/span>gendarmes. They bribed the gendarmes with valuable items, silver, or clothes to be allowed to buy <\/span><\/span>things [food]. People died. They were thrown from the carts. Some Roma would put dirt on the <\/span><\/span>corpses. Others would cover<\/span><\/span> the faces of the dead with cloth pieces or headscarves. They had to hide <\/span><\/span>money and valuables from the gendarmes. They would gather when they reached a village. The <\/span><\/span>gendarmes would tell the Roma to give them money if they wanted to enter the village to buy<\/span><\/span> food<\/span><\/span>[\u2026].”<\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/b>A report from the Ia\u0219i Gendarmerie Legion mentions that 19 nomads (4 families) were deported with <\/span><\/span>their own carts from the city at the beginning of June (DJANI, fond Circa a Va de Poli\u021bie Ia\u0219i, file <\/span><\/span>no. 5\/1942: f. 8<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>9). It is possible that the interviewee\u2019<\/span><\/span>s family was on this list of deportees (the list <\/span><\/span>being numeric and not nominal).<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>

<\/b>The town of Ungheni is located on the eastern bank of the Prut River, near the border between the <\/span><\/span>Republic of Moldova and Romania, opposite the village of the same name (formerly Bosia) on the <\/span><\/span>western bank of the Prut. After the annexation of Bessarabia in<\/span><\/span> 1812, the locality was elevated to the <\/span><\/span>status of a town and incorporated into the B\u0103l\u021bi volost (district). At the end of the 19th century, the <\/span><\/span>town of Ungheni had 2,898 inhabitants (DGB 1904: 219). In 1930, after the incorporation of <\/span><\/span>Bessarabia into Great<\/span><\/span>er Romania, B\u0103l\u021bi municipality had 30,570 inhabitants, including 33 Roma <\/span><\/span>(RGP 1930, II: 48<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>49). According to the testimony of the interviewee, several nomadic families<\/span><\/span><\/span>(called \u201cc\u0103tunari\u201d) lived near Ungheni. The men worked as blacksmiths (making agricultural tools and utensils), while the women were fortune tellers (\u201cread the cards\u201d).<\/div>\n

Historical Note on Deportation<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>

The deportation of Roma from Ungheni took place in the summer of 1942. They were on the western <\/span><\/span>bank of the Prut, in Ia\u0219i county when they were picked up by local police and gendarmes and <\/span><\/span>escorted, in convoy, from post to post by the gendarmes until they r<\/span><\/span>eached Transnistria. Along the <\/span><\/span>way, other carts joined the convoy, following the route: Ia\u0219i<\/span><\/span> –<\/span><\/span> Ungheni<\/span><\/span> –<\/span><\/span> B\u0103l\u021bi<\/span><\/span> –<\/span><\/span> R\u00e2bni\u021ba. The journey <\/span><\/span>was long, and food rations were insufficient. Many Roma died during the deportation, their bodies <\/span><\/span>abandoned by the gendarm<\/span><\/span>es by the roadside.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

The interviewee mentions that their family was interned in a camp on the banks of the<\/span><\/span> Bug River <\/span><\/span>(still unidentified). The deported Roma were housed in several barns, separate from the Jewish <\/span><\/span>deportees. The latter were executed sadistically by the guards (the barn where they were held was set <\/span><\/span>on fire, and those attempting to escape were shot<\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

According to the testimony, the Roma were spared because it was believed that Queen Maria had <\/span><\/span>sent planes to distribute flyers in Transnistria, requesting that the Roma not be killed (though Queen <\/span><\/span>Maria had died in 1938; for more details about this “myth,”<\/span><\/span> see Furtun\u0103 2015: 49).<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The existence of the Roma from Ungheni was marked by numerous hardships during their two years <\/span><\/span>in the camp. Their carts and horses were confiscated, but they were allowed to keep their tools to <\/span><\/span>make household items for the farmers in the neighboring villag<\/span><\/span>es. The deportees did not receive food <\/span><\/span>rations and had to trade the little food they had, the items they crafted, and gold coins for food (they <\/span><\/span>traded with farmers from neighboring villages). Deportees who tried to leave the camp in search of <\/span><\/span>food in the n<\/span><\/span>earby villages were shot by the gendarmes (the interviewee lost two grandfathers and a <\/span><\/span>sister in this manner). The cold and lack of food contributed to the  increased mortality rate among <\/span><\/span>the deported Roma. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Repatriation took place after the spring of 1944, when Soviet troops reoccupied Transnistria and <\/span><\/span>Bessarabia. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The nomadic Roma were forcibly settled by Soviet authorities in the post<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>war years. Some,<\/span><\/span>
