There were no animals in the barn,<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">only hay. The Roma from Romania would sneak out of the camp. They would crawl under the <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">barbed wire surrounding the barn. They would go through villages to<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">sell goods. The Roma stayed in <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">this barn until the end of the war. They did not receive food rations. The father of the interviewee <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">would secretly go to the market to buy food. They would sell their valuables. They were supervised <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">by Romanian and German g<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">endarmes. Many people died in the camp. The villagers would bring <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">carts to bury the dead. His grandfather, Ivan, died in the camp. He sneaked out to go to the market, <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">but was caught and shot. The family could not recover his body.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc4\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Romanian Archives (if available)<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span id=\"p136R_mc5\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc5\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">In the May 1942 census, the Police of Soroca city identified 19 nomadic Roma (3 families), 2 <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">vehicles, and 3 animals in the area. All were proposed for deportation to Transnistria (ANI, fond.<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">IRJ, file 259\/1942, f. 33). It is possible that the family of th<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">e interviewee was on this list. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p136R_mc6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Another archival document mentions a census conducted by the Chi\u0219in\u0103u Regional Police<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Inspectorate in the major cities of Bessarabia before August 13, 1942. In Soroca, four mobilizable<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Roma were identified, named Ple\u0219ca (Nicolae, Teodor, Ilie, and Petru).<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Some had already been<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">handed over to the gendarmes to be sent across the Dniester River (ANI, fond DGP, file no.<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">185\/1942, f. 139).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc7\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Historical Note on the Roma<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span id=\"p136R_mc8\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc8\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Soroca city is home to one of the largest Roma communities in the Republic of Moldova. Located on <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">the banks of the Dniester River, about 150 km from Chi\u0219in\u0103u (DGB 1904: 194<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">195). The 1897<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">census carried out by the Tsarist authorities recorded 15,351 people<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">in Soroca, including 12 Roma<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">(PVPNRI 1897, III: 241<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">242). After Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) became part of <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Greater Romania, the 1930 census in Soroca recorded 15,001 inhabitants, including 66 Roma (RGP <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">1930, II: 422<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">423). Some of these Roma w<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">orked as blacksmiths (Roma &#8220;cioc\u0103nari&#8221;). According to<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">the testimony of the interviewee, some blacksmiths had homes in Soroca but traveled from village to <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">village at certain times of the year to sell their products.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p136R_mc9\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc9\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Historical Note on Deportation<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span id=\"p136R_mc10\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span id=\"p136R_mc10\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Initially, nomadic and semi<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">nomadic Roma from Soroca were censused by local police agents in <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">May 1942. In the summer of 1942, local police and gendarmes rounded up the nomadic Roma from <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">the city and surrounding areas, organized them into columns, and escor<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">ted them to the border with <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Transnistria. The interviewee mentioned that, during the deportation, Roma families (such as <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">coppersmiths and bear trainers) were added to the column, while the Jewish deportees formed a <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">separate column. The march lasted nearly<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">two weeks, with the following route: Cos\u0103u\u021bi<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Iampol<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Moina. The deportees suffered from hunger (they were forced to sell coins and gold jewelry to the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">locals in exchange for food). During the march, many Jewish deportees were executed by German <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">guards and buried in mass graves.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page css-127\" data-page-number=\"30\"><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p138R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The interviewee\u2019s family was relocated to a barn near Vradiovka, Golta district. The regime was one<\/span><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">of a concentration camp: the barn was surrounded by barbed wire, the deportees were forced to work <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">the fields, food rations were insufficient, and the guard<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">s executed those who attempted to escape.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p138R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">Many deportees died in the camp, including the interviewee\u2019s grandfather. The few Roma who <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">survived were forced to escape the guards&#8217; vigilance and secretly go to neighboring villages to buy <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">food. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"p138R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">The interviewee likely repatriated to Romania in the spring<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">summer of 1944 when Transnistria was <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">occupied by Soviet troops. The Russian soldiers put the deportees in carts and allowed them to leave <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">for Soroca.
