\u201cLater, they arrived in Krasneanka, where there were hundreds of people from all Roma<\/span><\/span>
communities. They were supervised by Romanian gendarmes and Russian guards. Upon arrival, all<\/span><\/span>
the carts and horses were confiscated by the Russians. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Here, the deportees were forced to cut down trees in the forest and transport them to the train station <\/span><\/span>in Liuba\u0219evka. For two months, they did not see their families. They lived in tents.<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>

Later, they were relocated to Tridubi. There were more than 4,000 people there. They lived in huts<\/span><\/span>
built by the Russians. When they were placed in the huts, it was winter and snowing. Those who<\/span><\/span>
didn\u2019t manage to get a place in the huts all died. The bodies<\/span><\/span> were loaded onto a tractor with a large<\/span><\/span>
trailer driven by the Russians. There were several piles of bodies, frozen. The interviewee\u2019s father,<\/span><\/span>
Vasile, died from hunger. They had nothing to eat and had to eat dog meat. The place was <\/span><\/span><\/span>surrounded by gendarmes. The deportees called this place a \u2018camp.\u2019 The village was located some <\/span>distance away, and the Roma didn\u2019t dare to go there due to the gendarmes.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>

<\/b>The commune of Andr\u0103\u0219e\u0219ti is located in Ialomi\u021ba County, approximately 18 km from Slobozia.<\/span><\/span>
Around 1890, the commune had a population of 938 inhabitants, of which 5 were Roma families<\/span><\/span>
(MDGR 1898, I: 79). In 1930, the commune had 1,108 inhabitants, with 6 s<\/span><\/span>edentary Roma (RGP<\/span><\/span>
1930, II: 240). Periodically, nomadic Roma groups would settle in the commune, traveling from<\/span><\/span>
village to village to sell products (household utensils and aluminum pots) or work as day laborers.<\/span><\/span>
Several groups of nomads would gather for r<\/span><\/span>eligious holidays and celebrations. However, their<\/span><\/span>
movement through the country was closely monitored by the authorities (the \u201cbuliba\u0219ii\u201d had to<\/span><\/span>
notify the local gendarmerie about their movements, and the so<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>called “s\u0103la\u0219” cards had to be<\/span><\/span>
stamped upon arri<\/span><\/span>val and departure).<\/span><\/span><\/span>

The interviewee and their family were stopped near the commune of Gheorghe Doja (formerly<\/span><\/span>
Principesa Elena, Ialomi\u021ba County) and escorted from post to post by gendarmes until they reached<\/span><\/span>
Br\u0103ila, where a convoy of 150 carts was formed. The gendarmes escort<\/span><\/span>ed them through Transnistria, <\/span><\/span>crossing the Prut River, Cahul (Bessarabia), and the Dniester River.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

After crossing the border into Transnistria, the gendarmes confiscated their horses and carts and<\/span><\/span>
relocated them to Krasneanka (Golta County). They were allowed to live in tents for two months and<\/span><\/span>
were subjected to forced labor (cutting and transporting wo<\/span><\/span>od to the train station in Liuba\u0219evka).<\/span><\/span>
Later, they were relocated to the Tridubi camp (Golta County) in the winter of 1942. Many of the<\/span><\/span>
4,000 deported Roma crowded into huts perished from hunger and the cold. In the spring of 1943,<\/span><\/span>
they were once again re<\/span><\/span>located to the village of Krivoi<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Ozero (Golta County), where they were put<\/span><\/span>
to work in a collective farm. The forced labor regime and abuse by guards (rapes) caused many<\/span><\/span>
victims. Some survivors received food from local Ukrainian villagers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

Repatriation occurred in the spring of 1944, when the front moved into Transnistria, and the<\/span><\/span>
deportees began their journey back to Romania following the retreating Romanian<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>German troops.<\/span><\/span>
The journey back was long and exhausting, with many deportees walkin<\/span><\/span>g the route from Tiraspol to<\/span><\/span>
Tighina to Br\u0103ila. Many died from exhaustion and illness during the return journey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>
