<\/b>“After crossing the border into Transnistria, they were placed on a field. It was a ‘camp,’ where the<\/span><\/span>
interviewee was forced to abandon their parents and siblings. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The interviewee\u2019s parents, who had arrived earlier with another group, told them that before their <\/span><\/span>arrival, the place had been occupied by Jews, all of whom were shot. The Russian guards confirmed <\/span><\/span>this. They were told they had been shot face down in a comm<\/span><\/span>on grave. <\/span><\/span><\/span>From this place [the camp], the Bug River could be seen, with sentries standing guard on the <\/span><\/span>opposite shore.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

There were no huts in the camp. The deportees lived in tents. The area was surrounded by barbed<\/span><\/span>
wire. Whenever someone approached the wire fence, the guards would chase them away with baton <\/span><\/span>strikes.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span>

The city of C\u0103z\u0103ne\u0219ti (formerly a commune until 2004) is located in Ialomi\u021ba County, about 32 km<\/span><\/span>
from Slobozia. At the end of the 19th century, the commune had a population of 1,098 (MDGR<\/span><\/span>
1899, II: 208). The population doubled by 1930, when 2,037 inhabitan<\/span><\/span>ts were recorded, of which 14<\/span><\/span>
were sedentary Roma (RGP 1930, II: 240<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>241). In addition to these Roma, nomadic “cald\u0103rari”<\/span><\/span>
caravans would pass through the commune at certain times of the year, collecting metals and selling <\/span><\/span>household utensils and cauldrons t<\/span><\/span>o locals.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on Deportation<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The interviewee and their family were stopped by gendarmes while in Ialomi\u021ba County and escorted<\/span><\/span>
to Br\u0103ila. In this city, a long convoy of carts was formed, and the nomadic Roma were sent, under<\/span><\/span>
strict guard, from post to post by gendarmes, until reaching<\/span><\/span> Gala\u021bi, and then across the border into<\/span><\/span>
Transnistria. The interviewee\u2019s family hid their gold in the wheel axle of their cart and thus avoided<\/span><\/span>
the forced conversion of their gold coins into Reichsmarks.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Once in Transnistria, the deportees were placed in a camp by the Bug River, surrounded by barbed<\/span><\/span>
wire and guarded by gendarmes. They were allowed to sleep in tents and were given minimal rations <\/span><\/span>of water and food (a cup of grain for the entire family). Som<\/span><\/span>e deportees died from hunger, typhus, <\/span><\/span>and the brutality of the local Ukrainian guards (rapes and summary executions). After a few months, <\/span><\/span>the interviewee and their family were transferred to a new location. Approximately 500<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>600<\/span><\/span>
deportees were crowded into<\/span><\/span> huts that could barely protect them from the harsh climate (many Roma <\/span><\/span>died from the cold). The interviewee\u2019s in<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>laws, brother<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>law, and mother died in Transnistria.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 Repatriation took place in the spring of 1944, following the retreat of Romanian<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>German troops in <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
the face of the advancing Red Army. The journey back home was long and filled with dangers. The<\/span><\/span>
retreating German troops attempted to eliminate the Roma near<\/span><\/span> Varvarovka (Oceakov County).<\/span><\/span>
Some Roma died on the return journey due to physical exhaustion and the typhus epidemic.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
