“The witness and their family were taken by Romanian gendarmes and locked in a large school in <\/span><\/span>Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin, where they stayed for two days, after which they were placed in freight wagons at <\/span><\/span>the \u0218imian station. They were only allowed to take with them wha<\/span><\/span>t they had on their person. The <\/span><\/span>family was placed in a wagon with straw on the floor, where many other families were crowded <\/span><\/span>together.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
They passed through Odesa, but they were not allowed to get off the train. They arrived in <\/span><\/span>Varvaliovka, a locality near the Bug River. They were given little food and traveled through 3<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>4 <\/span><\/span>villages on their own initiative; the interviewee does not recall th<\/span><\/span>eir names. However, what is<\/span><\/span>
remembered is the hunger they faced throughout their time in Transnistria. Her parents, sister, and <\/span><\/span>brother died during the deportation. The rest of the families returned to the country by train after the <\/span><\/span>war.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on the Roma<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
<\/span><\/p>

The commune of Corl\u0103\u021bel is located in Mehedin\u021bi County, about 40 km from Drobeta Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin.<\/span><\/span>
At the end of the 19th century, the commune had a population of about 800 inhabitants (MDGR <\/span><\/span><\/span>1899, II: 650). In the 1930 general census, 1,366 inhabitants were recorded in the commune, of <\/span>which 11 were Roma (RGP 1930, II: 278<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>279). The commune hosted a series of annual fairs, <\/span><\/span>attracting nomadic “cald\u0103rari” groups who sold household items and produ<\/span><\/span>cts made of aluminum, <\/span><\/span>copper, and iron.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

The Roma from Corl\u0103\u021bel were taken by local gendarmes around September 10, 1942, and escorted to <\/span><\/span>Drobeta Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin, where they were locked in a school for two days. The interviewee stated that <\/span><\/span>the deported Roma were only allowed to take what they were w<\/span><\/span>earing, as their belongings had <\/span><\/span>already been nationalized. Around September 12, 1942, they joined a convoy of Roma gathered <\/span><\/span>from the entire county and were loaded into freight wagons at the \u0218imian station. These wagons<\/span><\/span>
were attached to the special E8 train<\/span><\/span> bound for Tighina. The train departed on September 12, 1942, <\/span><\/span>and, after a week of inhumane travel conditions, it reached its destination.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Once in Transnistria, the deportees passed through Odesa and were settled in Varvaliovka (Oceakov<\/span><\/span>
County). The interviewee and their family were relocated to 3<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>4 other unnamed localities, where<\/span><\/span>
they suffered greatly due to hunger and cold. Several family m<\/span><\/span>embers died in the camps (parents, a<\/span><\/span>
