<\/b>“When they arrived [in<\/span><\/span> Transnistria], they realized they had been lied to. They didn\u2019t find houses, <\/span><\/span>just huts without electricity. There were already other Romani there. It was a field. It was towards <\/span><\/span>the end of autumn [1942]. To eat, some ate meat from animals (dogs, cats). The<\/span><\/span>re was no water at <\/span><\/span>all.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
She remembered how her father had managed to hide a few gold coins, and later, he had to throw <\/span><\/span>them into a river. She also recalled a mother who was forced to abandon her child in the middle of <\/span><\/span>the road because she could no longer carry it. Everywhere ther<\/span><\/span>e were dead bodies. The corpses<\/span><\/span>
weren\u2019t buried [\u2026].”<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Dr\u0103g\u0103\u0219ani is a city in V\u00e2lcea County, located about 55 km from R\u00e2mnicu V\u00e2lcea<\/span><\/span>, where the Roma <\/span><\/span>were attested since the Middle Ages. In 1832, 34 Roma were registered in Dr\u0103g\u0103\u0219ani (Barbu et alii <\/span><\/span>2004: 288), and by the 1900s, their number had increased to about 170 (35 families) (MDGR 1900, <\/span><\/span>IIII: 238). The 1930 general population censu<\/span><\/span>s recorded 227 Roma in Dr\u0103g\u0103\u0219ani out of a total of <\/span><\/span>7,002 inhabitants (RGP 1930, II: 496<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>497). <\/span><\/span><\/span>The city was an important viticultural area and hosted various annual fairs, attracting many <\/span><\/span>blacksmiths and other Roma craftsmen from the surrounding areas. The family of the interviewee <\/span><\/span>was nomadic, traveling from village to village in carts to search fo<\/span><\/span>r raw materials necessary for <\/span><\/span>making tools and household utensils.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical Note on Deportation<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span>

The Dr\u0103g\u0103\u0219ani police commissariat, subordinated to the R\u00e2mnicu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>V\u00e2lcea city police, reported on <\/span><\/span>05.06.1942 that no nomads had been identified in the area or the surroundings of Dr\u0103g\u0103\u0219ani (ANI, <\/span><\/span>DGP fund, no. 187\/1942, f. 230). It is possible that the nomadic<\/span><\/span> Roma had moved to neighboring <\/span><\/span>villages in search of work.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

The interviewee’s family was taken by gendarmes from a nearby village (Vicna?), after being <\/span><\/span>promised they would be taken to a place where they would receive a house. The deportees were <\/span><\/span>escorted by gendarmes, traveling from post to post, until they reached<\/span><\/span> the eastern border of the<\/span><\/span>
country. After nearly two months of travel, the deportees arrived in Transnistria and realized they<\/span><\/span>
had been deceived: instead of houses and land, they were forced to sleep in huts and work in <\/span><\/span>collective farms (kolkhozes). The foo<\/span><\/span>d rations were very small (some deportees ate dog and cat<\/span><\/span>
meat), and there was no drinking water. The mortality rate was very high (many deportees were not<\/span><\/span>
even buried), and violence was common (disappearances of girls, summary executions). Leana<\/span><\/span>
St\u0103nescu<\/span><\/span> lost two grandparents, an uncle, and a brother in Transnistria.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>
In the spring of 1944, the interviewee’s family left Transnistria following the Romanian<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>German<\/span><\/span>
army’s retreat before the Soviet troops. The family walked to an unnamed train station, where they<\/span><\/span>
boarded a train destined for Romania.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
