\u201c[The deported Roma] left in carts pulled by donkeys and traveled all the way to Transnistria. They<\/span><\/span>
stopped several times to water the donkeys. They were guarded by numerous gendarmes, who <\/span><\/span>escorted them from post to post. At each stop, more Roma joined the<\/span><\/span>m. The gendarmes from one <\/span><\/span>village would escort them to the next, where they were handed over to the local gendarmes. The <\/span><\/span>journey lasted the entire summer. <\/span><\/span><\/span>All their tools were confiscated, making it impossible for  them to work. However, the interviewee\u2019s <\/span><\/span>family kept all their valuable possessions in their cart. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Once they arrived in Transnistria, they were relocated to the stables of kolkhozes. The Germans <\/span><\/span>executed newborns by shooting them [\u2026]\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Unfortunately, no archival documents related to the Roma deported from Strehaia have been<\/span><\/span>
identified.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Historical note on the Roma:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The presence of Roma in Strehaia is documented as early as the 17th century. At the beginning of <\/span>the 1900s, the commune of Strehaia had approximately 6,000 inhabitants (MDG 1901, V: 468). <\/span>During the interwar period, the commune was elevated to city status,<\/span><\/span> <\/span>and by 1930, its population had <\/span><\/span>reached 7,870, including 281 Roma (RGP 1930, II.1: 278<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>279). Many of them were<\/span><\/span> <\/span>c\u0103ld\u0103rari <\/span><\/span>(Roma specialized in metalworking), who moved seasonally for work.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n


Historical note on the deportation:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>

The<\/span><\/span> c\u0103ld\u0103rari<\/span><\/span> Roma from Strehaia were deported between June and August 1942 by local<\/span><\/span>
authorities. The deportees traveled with their own carts under gendarme escort, moving from one<\/span><\/span>
checkpoint to another until they reached the Transnistrian border. Along this long journ<\/span><\/span>ey, other <\/span><\/span>groups of deported Roma joined them. Their belongings<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>tools, money, and livestock<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>were <\/span><\/span>confiscated at the border, although some families managed to hide a few valuables from  the <\/span><\/span>gendarmes. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Once in Transnistria, the Roma deportees were relocated to various settlements in Golta County and <\/span><\/span>subjected to forced labor. They lived in stables and were forced to work in kolkhozes, suffering not <\/span><\/span>only from hunger, cold, and disease but also from mass e<\/span><\/span>xecutions carried out by the Germans <\/span><\/span>(likely Volksdeutsche troops). According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, these troops executed <\/span><\/span>several newborns by shooting them.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
