\u201c[\u2026] The Roma were dying of hunger, typhus, some were so starving that they ate corpses. They<\/span><\/span>
buried the dead 100 meters from the stables. The Roma themselves had to dig the graves. Elderly<\/span><\/span>
people died from illness, and children died from starvation. <\/span><\/span><\/span>They received small rations of potatoes and bits of bread, but it was not enough to feed everyone.<\/span><\/span>
Civilians sometimes brought food. After it rained, parents collected water from puddles to drink. The <\/span><\/span>interviewee\u2019s sister, Constan\u021ba, who was two years olde<\/span><\/span>r, died. <\/span><\/span><\/span>They were moved to a village 5 kilometers away and once again placed in a stable. When they <\/span>arrived, they found trenches dug into the ground, covered with wooden roofs. They all slept together <\/span>in these dugouts on straw<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>multiple families, 20<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>30 people per s<\/span><\/span>helter. Every morning, when they <\/span><\/span>woke up, they found 2<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>3 dead bodies among them [\u2026]\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

Historical note on the Roma:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>
 At the beginning of the 1900s, \u021a\u00e2n\u021b\u0103reni was part of Dolj County and had a total population of 1,056 <\/span><\/span>(MDG 1902, V: 681). The 1930 general census recorded 1,656 inhabitants in the commune,<\/span><\/span>
including 260 Roma (RGP 1930, vol. 2: 168<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>169). Most of these Roma w<\/span><\/span>ere sedentary, spoke<\/span><\/span>
Romani, and many practiced traditional crafts, particularly brick<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>making.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

Historical note on the deportation:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>
Local gendarmes deported the Roma from \u021a\u00e2n\u021b\u0103reni in early September 1942. The interviewee,<\/span><\/span>
along with their mother, sister, and two brothers, were taken from their home by gendarmes (the<\/span><\/span>
father was not deported as he was mobilized and fighting on the front<\/span><\/span>). The Roma were not allowed<\/span><\/span>
to take more than the bare necessities, and their belongings were nationalized. They were escorted to <\/span><\/span>the \u021a\u00e2n\u021b\u0103reni train station, loaded into freight cars, and transported towards Craiova. These cars<\/span><\/span>
were later attached to the<\/span><\/span> special train E8 Turnu<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Severin<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Tighina, which departed for Transnistria on<\/span><\/span>
September 12, 1942. After a difficult journey under horrific conditions, the train reached its<\/span><\/span>
destination nearly a week later (ANI, IGJ Fund no. 126\/1942: f. 213<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>214v).<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The deportees were moved from village to village until they arrived in Tchakova (possibly<\/span><\/span>
\u021avetkova, Berezovka County). They were crammed into a stable and forced to work in a kolkhoz<\/span><\/span>
under gendarme supervision. Living conditions were horrific: food rations<\/span><\/span> were insufficient,<\/span><\/span>
firewood was scarce, and typhus spread, leading to many deaths. Violence and abuse by the<\/span><\/span>
guards<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>including rapes, thefts, and summary executions<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>further dehumanized the deportees.<\/span><\/span>
According to the interviewee\u2019s testimony, some Roma reso<\/span><\/span>rted to eating corpses to survive.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The same witness recounted the sadistic methods used by the guards to terrorize and execute<\/span><\/span>
deportees. In one instance, a group of Roma who attempted to escape were forced onto a makeshift <\/span><\/span>raft and pushed into the middle of a river, where the raft fell apa<\/span><\/span>rt, and the escapees drowned. This <\/span><\/span>episode resembles the myth of the \u201cpaper boats\u201d (for more details, see Furtun\u0103 2015: 15<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>23).<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Repatriation to Romania took place in 1943 or 1944, aided by false documents obtained from a<\/span><\/span>
Roma man in Craiova. Once back in \u021a\u00e2n\u021b\u0103reni, the interviewee\u2019s family was unable to reclaim their<\/span><\/span>
nationalized property.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>
