Upon returning, they were given <\/span><\/span>cornmeal flour at the entrance to the stables. The fields were about 2 kilometers away, requiring <\/span><\/span>them to walk. They were escorted by<\/span><\/span> policemen, who assigned tasks and monitored them to prevent <\/span><\/span>escape. Despite being very young, the interviewed person also worked in order to receive an extra <\/span><\/span>ration of flour [\u2026].\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>

The deported Roma from T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te and G\u0103e\u0219ti were mentioned in a series of official documents <\/span><\/span>(reports and deportation lists) issued by the T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te City Police between 1942 and 1944. During <\/span><\/span>the May 1942 census, local police identified 86 \u201cproblematic\u201d s<\/span><\/span>edentary Roma. Unfortunately, the <\/span><\/span>name of the interviewed person (Ion Andrei, born in 1928) does not appear on this list, but the <\/span><\/span>family of Ni\u021b\u0103 Dumitru Andrei, a worker from G\u0103e\u0219ti, married with five children, is mentioned <\/span><\/span>(ANI, DGP fund, file no. 187\/194<\/span><\/span>2: f. 175<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>177).<\/span><\/span><\/span>

T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te, the county seat of D\u00e2mbovi\u021ba, had a significant Roma community at the beginning of the <\/span><\/span>20th century. The 1930 general census recorded 207 Roma in T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te and 115 Roma in G\u0103e\u0219ti, a <\/span><\/span>town about 30 km away (RGP 1930, vol. II.1: 154<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>155). Accordi<\/span><\/span>ng to the testimony of the <\/span><\/span>interviewed person, some of these Roma were<\/span><\/span> ursari<\/span><\/span> (bear trainers) and also engaged in horse<\/span><\/span>
trading.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>

The deportation of Roma from T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te and G\u0103e\u0219ti took place in three stages. First, in May 1942,<\/span><\/span>
local police conducted a census and identified 82 \u201cundesirable\u201d sedentary Roma. From this group, <\/span><\/span>they selected 25 individuals (9 families), who were taken fr<\/span><\/span>om their homes, had their belongings <\/span><\/span>nationalized, and were escorted to the police station around September 11, 1942. Finally, the<\/span><\/span>
deported Roma, including Ion Andrei and his family, were taken by gendarmes to T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te train<\/span><\/span>
station the next day, loaded<\/span><\/span> into freight cars attached to special train E4 Pite\u0219ti<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Tighina, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>deported to Transnistria. After nearly a week, train E4 arrived at its destination (IGJ Fund, file no.126\/1942: f. 322). After arriving in Transnistria, the deportees from T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te were placed in settlements such as Bogdanovka and Coz\u00e2rca in Oceakov County (IGJ Fund, file no. 43\/1943, vol. II: f. 42). According to the testimony of the interviewed person, deportees were sub<\/span><\/span>jected to forced labor, housed in a <\/span><\/span>kolkhoz stable, and forced to work the land in exchange for minimal cornmeal flour rations, under <\/span><\/span>the supervision of guards. A Roma<\/span><\/span> buliba\u0219a<\/span><\/span> (community leader) was responsible for assigning tasks <\/span><\/span>and organizing labor tea<\/span><\/span>ms.<\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div>
The interviewed person managed to escape with his family with the help of soldiers his father knew <\/span><\/span>from T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te. His father bribed a truck driver to take them to Odesa, then convinced a train <\/span><\/span>conductor to smuggle them into a train car bound for Romania.<\/span><\/span> Once back in T\u00e2rgovi\u0219te, the family <\/span><\/span>was unable to recover their nationalized property, including their house, which had been sold to local <\/span><\/span>residents.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
