The village gendarmes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">along with those from the city of Drobeta and the mayor, came looking for the family and told them\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they were going to be taken to the Bug, where they would wo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rk the land and become rich\u2026 They\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were not allowed to take anything with them\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not animals, furniture, gold, or any valuable objects.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything happened very quickly. They left in carts. The carts belonged to Romanian villagers,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who also drove them. All th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e carts departed from Burila and met the other Roma in Drobeta. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gendarmes, the mayor, and Prefect B\u0103culescu compiled lists of the\u00a0 [deported] Roma. They stayed in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the fields around the city of Drobeta for three days, waiting for the train. The peasants <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">felt sorry for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them and gave them bread and tomatoes for free.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><strong>Romanian archives (if they exist):<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant part of the information provided by the interviewed persons is corroborated by archival <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documents. In September 1942, the local gendarmes compiled a nominal list of Roma families from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burila Mic\u0103 commune who were to be deported. This list inc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">luded Janeta and Mi\u021ba \u0218erban, n\u00e9e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iancu (the interviewed persons), along with the rest of their families (father, mother, two brothers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and three other sisters). Other relatives mentioned in the interview (uncles, aunts, and grandparents)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also appear on th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is list (ANR, IGJ fund, file no. 127\/1942: f. 45).<\/span><\/p><p><strong>Historical note on the Roma:<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The village of Burila Mic\u0103 is located in Gogo\u0219u commune, Mehedin\u021bi County, about 40 km from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turnu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severin. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was part of Burila Mic\u0103 commune and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">included the villages of Bistre\u021b and Burila, where several dozen Roma fa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">milies lived (MDR 1902, II:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">81). According to the 1930 general census, Burila Mic\u0103 commune had 879 inhabitants, including\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99 sedentary Roma (most of whom spoke the Romani language) (RGP 1930, vol.
